Seventy-three years ago Frank Deutsch opened a shoe repair shop on 1st Street in Dixon. Later, the shop was moved to the basement under United Cigar on Galena Ave. in Dixon and the sale of shoes (including Red Wing Work Boots) were added. Modern Shoe Shop moved to the corner of Galena Ave. and River St. in 1975 and remained there for 25 years under the ownership of Gary and Karen Michel.

Today, Modern Shoe Shop lives up to it's name with a modern, new location, expanded line of the casual and dress shoes, and expanded services. Gary Michel, a Certified Pedorthist, is able to make all types of modifications to shoes and makes Orthotics (custom arch supports) for people with tired or sore feet.

Modern Shoe Shop is a Medicare provider. As a provider, they can help protect the feet of people with diabetes by providing proper shoes and inserts (covered by Medicare).
